“Flexibility in Workplace Key As Gen Y Joins Labor Force” - Jakarta Globe interviews Stephen Chatham, International Director of The Executive Centre

Often referred to as “Generation Y Brother”, Generation Y is flooding the workplaces of Jakarta, and they are here to stay.

“About 20 percent of the workforce in Jakarta today are Gen Y members, and in 10 Years, they’ll make up the largest portion of the workforce,” said Stephan Chatham, Director of The Executive Centre.

Born in the 1980’s and early 1990’s, Gen Y are best known for their tech savvy and laid back attitude. However, the reasons behind this seeming lack of ambition at the workplace may not be what many assume. Generation Y, as ambitious as they are, tend to focus more on a balanced personal and professional life. Very seldom would they prefer a career path requiring them to neglect a healthy family life.

“While Baby Boomers and Generation X require a more hierarchical office space with clearly defined office areas, Gen Y requires flexibility and a more communal atmosphere (in the workplace),” Chatham explained.

Therefore, as the number of Gen Y members in the workforce increase, Indonesian offices need to reinvent themselves in order to accommodate both the new comers and senior staff who are predominantly from Gen X.

“The office layouts need to change as Gen Y requires more collaborative spaces, but at the same time the layouts have to allow for the requirements of other generations,” Chatham said.

And the serviced office industry provides the flexibility to accommodate multiple generations and their differing work ethics within an office.

“Within The Executive Centre we have a number of services such as virtual offices and conference centres, which allow multiple generations to coordinate seamlessly,” said Chatham, who was referring to the third Executive Centre that opened in Jakarta earlier this year.
